Hosted by the Puerto Rican Family Institute – Manhattan Mental Health Clinic, Allies in Mental Health: Centering Survivors is a panel discussion focused on rethinking protection and policy for family safety. Taking place on Thursday, May 7 at the Puerto Rican Family Institute, New York, NY, this in-person event brings together policymakers, clinicians, advocates, and community members for a critical conversation.
As part of PRFI’s Allies in Mental Health series, this panel explores the intersection of intimate partner violence (IPV) and the child welfare system, with an emphasis on the lived experiences of survivors. The discussion highlights how systemic involvement can sometimes contribute to re-traumatization, particularly for low-income women of color, and aims to foster dialogue that leads to more effective, compassionate solutions.
Featuring a diverse group of panelists — including city officials, legal professionals, advocates, and survivors — the event creates space for shared perspectives and collaborative problem-solving. By connecting direct service providers with those shaping policy, the conversation seeks to strengthen support systems and improve outcomes for families impacted by violence.
